“Won” Hour with Pastor Won
Every Tuesday and Thursday from August 9 through Sept 30, I
will set aside two appointment times (one in the morning and one in the
afternoon or evening) to meet each of you individually or as a family. When we
meet I hope you will share yourself and your family history along with the
spiritual discipline you practice on a regular basis.
The early church met at the temple everyday (Acts 2:46).
Like this early church practice, I would like for us to meet at the church.
Good things happen when we meet at the church.
I will post a large signup sheet on the wall of Fellowship
Hall, and your responsibility is to find the date that suits you and sign your
name. I look forward to spending this time with you.
Pastor Won Teaches Friendship Sunday School Class
Pastor Won will begin teaching from the Book of Mark
starting August 7 at 11:15 AM. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall for about
one hour.
This Bible-study course is an eleven-week commitment with a
focus on modeling after Jesus’ Way. I am extending my invitation to you all to
follow the Jesus in the book of Mark.
If you come to the study you will never read the Bible the
same way you did in the past. You will also have a radically different understanding
— true teachings of the Bible and what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus
Christ.
We will start with a light beverage and snack (this will buy
me some time to regroup from the preaching), sing one hymn, and then, STUDY,
closing with the Lord’s Prayer. It should last about ‘won’ hour.
Lectio
Divina (Divine Reading) Group
Beginning in September 7 on each Wednesday morning,10:00 - 11:00 AM, we
will gather in the Fellowship Hall to pray and to study the weekly lectionary
This year’s reading mainly comes from the Book of Matthew. You are to read the
given lectionary (it will be provided by the pastor) prior to gathering so that
you can participate in sharing with the group.
Membership Roll - Mt. Moriah Church (MTMC) is moving
into 21C technology!
How many people does it take to get every member of Mt.
Moriah Church onto a computer membership roll? Answer: Four generous and
skillful people.
It all began with generous gifts of one computer unit and
membership software from Jay Ragsdale, and Betty Knight with her digital
camera, and Wayne Knight writing down the names as Betty took pictures of every
Mt. Moriah member. Lastly, Bri Walker, with her ninety-word per minute typing
skill and great patience, entered each member’s information into the computer
system.
The church would like to thank all of you for your generous
gifts of time, materials, and skill to make this possible.
Now, the church will be asking each member to fill out the
attached membership form to finish the work of compiling membership information
in a computer data format. As you know, your membership information is only as
good as what you share with us. Please take time to fill out the form and place
it in the cardboard box which will be placed in the narthex. If you receive
this information in the mail, return it to the church address by mail.
Once this work is done the main computer with member
information will be placed in the church office for many years to come, and it
can be updated by simply typing in the information.
MTMC Pictorial
Directory
Our goal is to publish the pictorial directory on September
18th (Homecoming Celebration) this year. In order to keep the cost
down the church is going to publish the directory” in-house”. One copy will be
distributed to each family. Additional copies will be available for a small
donation to the church.
Pastor’s Office
will be Relocating Downstairs
The new office will be the room that was used by the Adult
Bible Study class. Their members decided to turn over the classroom for the
pastor’s office; thank you!
This office will not only function as the pastor’s study but
also will function as the central hub for collecting and disseminating
information pertaining to the life of the church. Also, being on the first
floor will provide easier access for the members and will give the pastor a
place for meeting and hosting visitors.
Some renovation will be needed to turn this classroom into
an office space and I suspect it will take us until Christmas to move into it.
We will update you on the progress.
MTMC is now on
Facebook
Be sure to check it out by typing Mt. Moriah United
Methodist Church on your Facebook search box. Click Like and
you will receive any updates. This year’s Vacation Bible School is already on
the page as well as upcoming events.
MTMC e-Prayer
Group
If you have an email account and would like to be part of an
e-Prayer Group let the pastor know by emailing to the church email (mtmchurch@hotmail.com). The church will
be sending out the prayer concerns and occasionally upcoming events
announcements.
MTMC Bulletin
Board in the Fellowship Hall
Any upcoming events, meeting dates, and announcements will
be posted on the large-sized monthly calendar. Before you sign up any dates or
reserve church facilities check first with the church office by calling
434-823-9557.
Calling All Youth
Sunday, September 11th, 6-8 PM youth ages 14-18
are invited to a visioning and planning meeting at Mt. Moriah Church Fellowship
Hall.
We will start with pizza dinner, of course, beverages to
wash it down, a healthy dose of fresh salad (broccoli included), and dessert to
finish it off AND then, we will knock our brains together to start our youth
group.
If you are an adult and wish to volunteer you are also
welcome.
Our goal is to study the Bible, to have fun in fellowship, to
do outreach works, and to plan one small and one big trip for mission work
and/or retreat.
Administrative Council Meeting Minutes
Last month the Council decided to distribute the minutes
including a summarized version of the financial statement and place it in the
narthex. The reason for this action is to inform our members about the on-going
mission and ministry of the church.
Community Kid’s Day is August 20 from 11 –2
PM. This exciting event is hosted by Mt. Moriah Men’s Group. Help the men’s
group to spread the word to kids around our community. Food and fun all in one
day!
Homecoming is
Sunday, September 18th. Rev. Adam White will be our guest speaker. Worship is
at 10:00 AM followed by a covered-dish luncheon. Special music will be by
Jennifer Morris.
2011 Charge
Conference
Our Charge Conference is September 19th, 7:00 PM.
@ Fellowship Hall. Submit all reports and forms to the church office by Sunday,
September 11.
According to the Book
of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, the Charge Conference “shall
be the connecting link between the local church and the general Church and
shall have general oversight of the church [in our case, Administrative]
council.” The voting membership in a Charge Conference includes all attending
people who are Administrative Council members, and any retired ordained
ministers and diaconal ministers who hold their membership with us. The
Discipline encourages us to have the make-up of the council as inclusive as
possible, to represent all segments of our congregation, including youth. A
Charge Conference is required to be held annually. The district superintendent
presides or may designate an elder to preside. At the annual meeting, the
Charge Conference reviews and evaluates the total missions and ministry of the
church, receives reports, modifies organizational plans if necessary, and
adopts objectives and goals recommended by the Ad Council. Additionally, Charge
Conferences recommend and review candidates for ordained ministry, lay
speakers, and Church related vocations. Charge Conferences set and approve
compensation for pastors and any bishop-appointed staff working at our church.
We also elect lay leaders (i.e., chairpersons of work areas, Ad Council
officers, and lay members to annual conference) at Charge Conferences.
